Toll update Germany & Austria 2023/2024
New German Truck Toll 2023/2024
Germany will be the first country in Europe to introduce a new CO2 differentiation for truck tolls. This introduction will send a price signal that will make the use of trucks with alternative drives significantly more attractive for the freight transport industry. This is the result of an amendment to the law with which the German government intends to accelerate the switch to climate-neutral drive systems. The proposed legislation serves to implement the amended Eurovignette Directive, which came into force in March 2022. Among other things, this provides a CO2 differentiation of the truck toll for heavy goods vehicles by March 25th 2024, at the latest, as well as the inclusion of all trucks with a technically permissible total mass of more than 3.5 tons by March 25th 2027.
- Phase 1: Introduction of a CO2 surcharge; On December 1, 2023, the new CO2 surcharge and the new CO2 differentiation of prices are introduced.
- Phase 2: Tolls for trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons; On July 1, 2024, the toll obligation will be extended to trucks with more than 3.5 tons technically permissible total mass.
- Phase 3: Zero-emission vehicles; Zero-emission vehicles are exempt from tolls until December 31st 2025. From January 1st 2026, they will pay a 75% reduced toll rate for infrastructure costs – plus the toll rates for air pollution and noise pollution.
Since the implementation of this new law has increased toll prices for freight transport, PTV Logistics customers will already now be able to predict the toll price for the routes of tomorrow, taking into account the predicted price changes of implementation phase 1 and phase 2.
New Austria Truck Toll 2023/2024
We activated the updated detailed toll forecast layers for Austria, referenced to PTV Europe / World City Map Premium 2023.2H. Scenario 7: valid from January 1st 2024. This forecast contains the most likely tariffs which will be valid from this date on, in accordance with ASFINAG. These tariffs also include the planned CO2 surcharge. In Austria, all prices of CO2 classes 2-4 are coupled solely with EURO 6. There is no longer a distinction between day and night tariffs, only the Brenner Pass has different day and night tariffs for vehicles in category 4 (these are vehicles with 4 or more axles).
