The Water Treatment Industry: Demanding Local Logistics Operations

The water treatment industry plays an essential role in ensuring the smooth operation of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Behind water treatment equipment, such as water softeners, lies a particularly demanding logistics operation that depends on the regular delivery of essential consumables, particularly regeneration salt.

Companies operating in this sector must manage frequent deliveries to a large number of sites, often geographically dispersed and sometimes with no recipient present when the goods are delivered. Service quality therefore relies on several key factors: delivery traceability, reliable proof of delivery, responsiveness to unexpected events, and seamless communication between drivers, operations teams, and customers.

In this context, supply chain digitalization has become a true performance enabler. Real-time transport visibility solutions now allow companies in the sector to improve operational efficiency, enhance customer satisfaction, and reduce their environmental impact by eliminating paper-based processes.

About Distrisel

For nearly 50 years, Distrisel has been a French company specializing in the distribution of salt for water treatment applications. A subsidiary of the Salins Group, the company supplies more than half of France's heating system operators and water treatment professionals.

Each year, nearly 30,000 tonnes of salt are delivered to more than 25,000 delivery locations. Transport operations are managed by its subsidiary Sotrasel, which operates a fleet of 20 heavy goods vehicles, 4 light commercial vehicles, and 1 furniture lift truck.

From its eight regional depots, Distrisel organizes between 15 and 20 delivery routes every day to deliver salt bags directly to the location of the water softeners, ensuring an exceptionally high level of service for its customers.

Distrisel's Logistics Challenge

Until 2024, route management relied entirely on paper delivery documents provided to drivers. This approach was highly vulnerable to operational disruptions and poorly suited to deliveries that were often carried out without a recipient present on site.

This organization presented several limitations:

  • Heavy reliance on paper documents;
  • No real-time visibility into route progress;
  • Difficulties in providing proof of delivery when drivers were working alone on site;
  • Longer administrative processing times before invoicing;
  • Less efficient communication between drivers, transport planners, and customers.

As Alexandre Mosson, Sales Director at Distrisel, explains:

“We managed everything manually. A simple printer failure could disrupt an entire delivery route. And without digital proof, it was difficult to document deliveries in environments where no one is present to receive our salt bags. Our drivers very often work alone on site.”

Faced with these challenges, Distrisel wanted to modernize its operations with a solution capable of fully digitizing delivery tracking while maintaining the high level of service for which the company is known.

The Solution Provided by PTV Logistics: PTV Axylog

To support its digital transformation, Distrisel chose PTV Axylog, PTV Logistics' real-time transport visibility solution.

Since July 2025, delivery routes have been sent directly to drivers on their business smartphones. Each driver has access to all the information required to carry out their deliveries: route instructions, delivery schedules, loading quantities, and fully digitized delivery notes.

Throughout the day, operations teams benefit from real-time visibility into delivery progress.

Once on site, PTV Axylog also enables the creation of digital proof of delivery through several key features, including:

  • Automatic geolocation;
  • Photo capture;
  • Electronic signature when available.

Any issues encountered during delivery, such as a closed site, damaged bags, or any other incident, can be reported immediately through the PTV Axylog app, enabling faster and more efficient resolution.

The solution also simplifies the management of EUR pallets, allowing drivers to record in real time the pallets delivered to or collected from each customer.

Finally, the complete digitization of the process accelerates administrative workflows. Because delivery information is available immediately after route completion, invoicing can be initiated as early as the day following delivery.

Results

electronic Proof Of Delivery

75,000 Sheets of Paper Eliminated Every Year

The digitization of delivery routes eliminates paper documents and reduces environmental impact.

Cost control

Invoicing as Early as the Next Day

Real-time delivery data reporting enables invoicing as early as the next day.

Faster planning

Implemented in Just 2 Months

Deployed in just 2 months, the solution was quickly adopted by both depot teams and drivers.

A Fast and Seamless Deployment

Launched in May 2025, the digitalization project was fully rolled out across all eight Distrisel depots and to every Sotrasel driver in just 2 months.

This rapid implementation enabled field teams to adopt the new tools immediately, without disrupting day-to-day operations.

Drivers quickly integrated the application into their daily routines, while operations teams immediately benefited from more reliable, more comprehensive, and real-time information.

A Forward-Looking Partnership Between PTV Logistics and Distrisel

Beyond the digitization of delivery operations, the project carried out with PTV Logistics marks a significant milestone in Distrisel’s logistics transformation journey.

By modernizing its entire delivery process, the company is simultaneously improving operational efficiency, enhancing the quality of service provided to its customers, and strengthening its environmental performance.

Building on the success achieved in France, the Salins Group is now considering extending this logistics model to several European countries, leveraging PTV Logistics’ expertise and the capabilities of PTV Axylog.

“We wanted to modernize the way we work with a solution that is simple, reliable, and well suited to our high-service delivery model. PTV Axylog fully met our expectations, delivering positive results from both an operational and a commercial perspective.”
